ISL78263

Synchronous buck-boost controller that regulates the output across a wide input range in a compact QFN package.

The ISL78263 is a Renesas synchronous buck-boost controller that regulates its output across a wide input range, so it works whether the input is above or below the output voltage, in a compact QFN package. It suits battery-powered and automotive systems where the rail moves across the output voltage, such as a battery that starts above and falls below the regulated level, and where a plain buck or boost converter would drop out of regulation. As a controller, it drives external switches, which lets a designer scale the current to the load, and its synchronous operation keeps the efficiency high across the input range. The device is part of Renesas's broad power portfolio, which it built on the technology it gained with Intersil and its own design teams, and it is supported by reference designs and FAE support. Choosing a buck-boost controller follows from the input range and the load, and the external switches must be chosen with the controller. Every device is factory-traceable and ships with an import declaration, a certificate of origin and RoHS documentation. BeiLuo holds this part in regional stock and our FAE team supports topology, switch selection and layout design.

FAE Professional Review

This is the controller we recommend when the input rail moves across the output voltage and a plain buck or boost would drop out. It drives external switches, so the current can be scaled to the load, and the synchronous operation keeps the efficiency high. The main engineering tasks are the switch selection and the layout, so plan those early and keep the power loop tight.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need a buck-boost controller?

Use it when the input can be above or below the output, such as a battery rail that moves across the regulated level, where a plain buck or boost would drop out of regulation.

Confirm the input range against your rail.

How do I choose the external switches?

As a controller, it drives external switches, so the switch ratings set the current the design can deliver. Choose the switches for the current and the voltage with margin.

Our FAE team helps with the switch selection and the layout.
